Use the Assembly’s BSL or ISL terms before Question Time

Prepare specialised parliamentary vocabulary with the Northern Ireland Assembly’s signed glossary, then select the actual proceeding.

Prepare the institutional words that matter

Northern Ireland Assembly TV provides Assembly terms in British Sign Language and Irish Sign Language. Its glossary groups material around the Assembly, committees and the legislative process, with the stated aim of helping viewers understand proceedings such as Question Time.

Choose the relevant language section and a small set of terms for the meeting you intend to follow. Preserve the BSL or ISL label with the resource. A broad “sign language” bookmark loses a distinction that the publisher deliberately makes.

Connect the term with its role in the proceeding

A terminology clip can explain a specialised label while the full meeting shows how that role or process appears in practice. Use them in that order when the vocabulary is the obstacle: inspect the term, then return to the proceeding where it matters.

Keep questions about the sign itself separate from questions about parliamentary business. Recognising a label does not establish what a committee decided, and understanding a process does not mean every item on its agenda has already taken place. The meeting’s own record supplies those details.

The glossary is a viewing aid rather than a substitute for an entire language course or a promise of universal signed coverage. This article does not describe individual signs from text, invent hand movements or claim that a signed clip was played during research. Use the actual published visual resource.

Find the complete signed edition separately

The Assembly site has distinct routes for BSL and ISL content as well as the terminology resource. Inspect the full meeting or item you want, including its date and language label. The existence of a glossary entry does not establish that every meeting on the subject has the same language presentation.

For a prepared session, keep two links: the terminology aid and the relevant proceeding. Mark which is which in the description. This avoids a common dead end in which a short definition is shared as if it were the requested debate. Recheck the current coverage page before the session instead of extrapolating a general weekly statement into an exact future broadcast promise.

Questions answered

Are the BSL and ISL sections interchangeable labels?

The Assembly presents them as separate language resources. Choose the section needed by the viewer.

Does a signed glossary entry mean every related meeting is signed?

No. Check the actual meeting’s language edition separately from the terminology aid.
