A visible icon and its activation area can differ
A small caption symbol can have a generous button area, while a larger-looking graphic can still have a difficult target. When touch repeatedly activates a neighbouring control, report the actual interaction rather than judging only the icon's appearance. The relevant task is selecting captions reliably without accidentally seeking, casting or leaving the programme.
W3C's minimum target-size guidance uses CSS pixels and includes size, spacing and specific exceptions. Its general minimum is 24 by 24 CSS pixels, but a complete assessment needs the actual target and context. A phone screenshot measured in device pixels is not enough to declare conformance or failure.
A hypothetical caption selection
Suppose a viewer tries to open captions on an authorised recording, but nearby touches open another player menu. Record the device orientation, browser or app version, viewing mode and which action occurs. Check whether the problem also occurs with a supported external pointer or keyboard if those are available, without treating them as a required replacement for touch.
Try the player's documented enlarged or fullscreen layout if it is comfortable and accessible. That comparison can identify a particular layout state. It should not be presented as a permanent answer if fullscreen creates another obstacle. Keep the viewer's required caption task at the centre of the report.
Do not repeatedly touch controls during an important live moment to demonstrate the issue. A short authorised sample or nonessential viewing period is a better setting. Note whether the visible button moves when controls appear or disappear; changing positions can complicate an otherwise reasonable target size.
Validate reliable activation
After an interface change, test the same caption action in the affected mode. Confirm that the expected menu opens and that the required track can be selected. Also check the adjacent control, because enlarging one activation area must not silently overlap another. The goal is predictable operation of both actions.
A useful report identifies the intended control, neighbouring result and conditions under which the mistake occurs. It does not need a diagnosis of the viewer's dexterity. This gives the player team concrete evidence about activation geometry while keeping caption availability and media delivery as separate questions.
Questions answered
Does a tiny icon always mean the touch target is tiny?
No. The activation area can be larger than the visible symbol. Inspect or test the actual interactive target.
Can I assess CSS target size from raw screenshot pixels alone?
Not reliably. Device pixels, CSS pixels and zoom conditions differ; the actual component and context matter.
