Media production case notes

A new colour label does not prove a converted picture

Review the difference between describing owned video samples and transforming them for another colour representation.

Europe. In the picture.

Ask what changed

An owned media workflow can change the description attached to a picture, transform the sample values, or do both. The output showing a familiar colour label does not identify which operation happened. Keep the processing record and source interpretation alongside the final metadata report.

A reliable source record might justify correcting an omitted or wrong label. A destination requiring a different representation may instead need a real transformation. Those cases can produce similar-looking metadata while requiring different preparation.

Do not guess an input interpretation from resolution or from a viewer's preference for more saturation. If the evidence is missing, preserve the uncertainty and source. A speculative tag can influence every later colour-aware stage.

Compare the right candidates

Create a short candidate from material you own and include neutral tones, faces and highlight detail. Change one justified assumption at a time while keeping the viewing route fixed. Record whether the candidate is a metadata correction or a conversion.

If a metadata correction restores the known source description, document why that description is trustworthy. If a conversion is required, record input and output assumptions and inspect the exported result. Neither a successful command nor a screenshot proves mastering accuracy.

VideoColorSpace by Mozilla Contributors documents distinct colour-description properties under CC-BY-SA 2.5 or later. The audit procedure here is original guidance. Keep the candidate and source identifiers so another reviewer can assess the actual decision rather than trusting a final filename containing corrected-colour.

Questions answered

Can a label change be appropriate?

Yes, when evidence establishes that the stored samples were described incorrectly.

Does a BT.709 output label prove an HDR-to-SDR transformation?

No. Check the actual processing and sample interpretation.
