HTTP media publication notes

Separate waiting for a response from transferring media

Choose the next measurement when an owned media request is slow without calling every delay low bandwidth.

Europe. In the picture.

Put timestamps around the phases

A one-second request can spend most of that second waiting for a response or most of it transferring bytes. Those observations lead to different next questions. Keep the request's total duration, time to first response bytes and payload transfer interval separately labelled.

In an invented observation, waiting lasts 900 milliseconds and transfer lasts 100. Increasing the nominal access-line speed does not automatically explain the larger waiting interval. Queuing, connection work, the origin and intermediaries remain candidates, rather than conclusions.

Correlate what you control

Compare client-side timing with origin or application logs using a request identifier where available. Keep clocks and measurement boundaries explicit. A server log showing a short handler duration does not measure DNS, connection setup or the entire path to the reader.

MDN's Server-Timing reference, by Mozilla Contributors under CC BY-SA 2.5 or later, describes a response mechanism for reporting server metrics. Treat those metrics as the instrumented components' account, not as a complete replacement for end-to-end timing.

Choose a bounded next check

If the slow phase is waiting, investigate the responsible path with controlled comparisons. If transfer dominates, compare payload size and sustained transfer observations under stated conditions. Avoid declaring the codec or a player's decoder responsible from request duration alone.

Do not expose sensitive internal topology in public diagnostics merely because a timing header can carry descriptions. Use the detail needed by the intended reviewer and retain fuller operational evidence privately. No request timings in this example came from a real service.

Questions answered

Does Server-Timing measure every network phase?

No. It reports the server metrics the publisher chose to instrument.
