Read Eurovision points as a converted ranking

Understand why twelve points does not reveal the number of voters or the size of a raw voting margin.

Check the edition before using the rule

The Eurovision rules page retrieved on 4 November 2026 explicitly labels its public summary for the 2027 contest. It describes national jury rankings and audience rankings being converted to the familiar points scale: twelve for first, ten for second, eight for third, then seven through one for the remaining top-ten positions. Use the rules for the edition being studied, especially with older recordings.

That conversion is the important viewing distinction. The scoreboard displays points after an ordering process. Twelve points is not a claim that twelve people voted, and a two-point gap does not directly reveal the difference in the number of audience votes.

Follow the ranking stage separately

For the audience side, the checked summary describes ranking songs by votes within each national audience and separately within the Rest of the World block before allocating points. For juries, individual juror rankings are combined into a national jury ranking. Neither stage should be replaced by reading the displayed points as one juror’s personal marks.

In a hypothetical audience ranking, two songs could finish first and second with either a narrow or a wide raw margin. Their positions can still map to the same top two point awards. This example illustrates the conversion; it does not claim access to any unpublished vote totals.

Compare the right layer of the result

When discussing a performance’s support, identify which layer you mean: a jury’s combined ranking, one audience ranking, the resulting points or the combined contest total. A programme may reveal these in different stages, so retain the heading associated with the number.

Do not infer a raw percentage of viewers from a point award. Nor does a national point ranking establish that every juror or every viewer preferred the same song. The aggregation is intended to produce one result from multiple individual choices.

The public summary says voting arrangements can be adjusted between editions. This article therefore does not supply a permanent weighting formula, a voting window or payment instructions. Its task is to explain what the score represents. For a historical comparison, keep each edition’s official rules and results together instead of silently applying the currently published summary to every archived show.
