Start with Roku’s caption controls
France Channel’s help article directs Roku viewers to Settings, then Accessibility or Captions, then Captions Mode and On Always. This differs from its browser instructions, which use a gear inside the video player. If searching the film screen has led nowhere, check the documented device route.
Menu wording can change with a Roku update, so look for the equivalent captions control on your device. Change one setting at a time and return to the same passage of the programme. That gives you a clear comparison instead of several simultaneous changes whose effect is difficult to identify.
A displayed caption and a language track are separate checks
First establish whether captions appear at all. Then check whether the required language is offered for the chosen programme. Turning captions on cannot create a translation that the title does not supply.
Use a passage with ordinary speech for the check. A silent scene, music-only opening or credits sequence may give you no useful evidence. If captions appear in one passage but not another, note the times rather than concluding immediately that the whole service has lost subtitles.
Compare carefully with another screen
If you already have access on a computer or phone, inspect the same title and language there. The comparison can help you describe the issue: a track absent across both screens is different from a track visible on one device only. It does not by itself identify the cause or guarantee a fix.
Avoid buying another subscription to perform this comparison. Use the access you already have and keep the account identity consistent. If you cannot check a second screen, a precise Roku report is still useful. Include device model, programme, selected language and what the captions setting currently shows.
Keep the report focused
France Channel’s cited instructions were updated in July 2023 and were checked for this article on 4 November 2026. If the current interface differs, describe that difference to support. A photograph of the relevant menu may help, provided it contains no sign-in code or personal account information.
Questions answered
Will On Always add subtitles to a title with no supplied track?
No. It controls caption display; it does not supply a missing translation.
