Preserve the actual alert
If a player explicitly asks for an HDCP-compatible connection after a display adapter is added, keep that wording. It points to the protected output path and deserves a different report from a decoder error or an expired account. A menu or ordinary photograph appearing on the external display does not prove that protected video can use the same route.
Apple's Digital AV adapter guidance is one concrete example: some films, television programmes and streaming video require an HDCP-compatible digital connection. That guidance does not establish that every piece of media is protected or that every IPTV service uses the same protection system. Apply the requirements of the actual application, device and content provider.
Draw the real connection in words
Write the chain from source device to screen: device connector, adapter model, cable, any intermediate receiver or switch, and display input. Record model numbers instead of USB adapter or HDMI thing. A chain can contain a supported connector but an unsupported conversion or intermediate component. The connector's physical fit is not the whole compatibility question.
In a hypothetical meeting-room setup, an authorised film plays on a tablet's own screen but shows an HDCP alert through a VGA conversion. A slideshow still works. The slideshow is a useful control for basic display output, while the film's alert identifies an additional requirement. It would be inaccurate to report that the adapter has no picture under every condition.
Use supported connection changes
Consult the device and adapter manufacturer's instructions before rearranging the chain. Where the manufacturer documents a direct compatible connection, compare that route with the longer chain and record the result. Make one change at a time. Do not buy a device advertised to strip or bypass output protection; that is not a supported repair of the intended viewing path.
Disconnecting and reconnecting supported components can be part of official troubleshooting, but avoid treating every black screen as an HDCP issue. Without the alert or other evidence, wrong input selection, an unsupported output mode or a failed cable remain separate possibilities. Preserve what the display and player actually say rather than assigning a protection diagnosis from a blank image alone.
Validate the intended programme
Once the supported chain is established, retest the authorised programme that produced the alert. A successful menu display is insufficient validation because it did not exercise the same requirement. Confirm picture and sound, then note whether the problem returns after the device is reconnected in its normal order.
The result may still require the content provider's help. Give support the alert, complete connection chain and controlled comparison, with private account details omitted from public posts. A compatible output chain does not grant content rights, change the account term or turn a lower-resolution source into a higher-resolution one. It answers one specific connection requirement.
Questions answered
Should I buy an HDCP bypass adapter?
Use the manufacturer's supported compatible connection and ask the provider about its requirements. Bypassing protection is not a supported troubleshooting solution.
