The Wi-Fi symbol is an association clue
Joining a hotel's wireless network and receiving internet access can be separate steps. A captive network may require a welcome page, room credentials, payment or acceptance of terms. Apple documents this distinction for iPhone and iPad. A device can remain associated with such a network without completing the internet-access step, so the Wi-Fi symbol alone does not establish a working route to a media service.
Use the venue's official network name and access instructions. If the expected welcome page does not appear, consult the device's normal network information and the venue's support desk. Do not enter media-account credentials into a hotel portal. The network login and viewing-service login are separate relationships even when both happen on the same screen during a trip.
A hypothetical arrival sequence
Suppose a traveller joins the stated hotel network, dismisses a welcome screen and opens a player. The player's previously saved menu appears, but media does not start. Completing the legitimate venue portal then allows ordinary websites to load. That sequence gives a useful network-access explanation to investigate before renewing an account or clearing the player's stored settings.
Keep the observation bounded. An ordinary website loading after portal completion establishes some internet access at that moment, not permission for every media service or a guarantee of stable bandwidth. The venue may have separate network policies, and the provider may have account or location conditions. Ask the relevant owner rather than assuming a successful portal login settles all of them.
Separate the portal from local discovery
Even after internet access works, a hotel network may prevent devices from finding or communicating with one another. Casting is therefore a second task. A phone streaming successfully does not prove that it can discover the room's receiver. Do not change the hotel router or try to bypass isolation controls; ask whether an approved casting workflow is available.
If several devices are involved, establish whether each needs its own portal registration. Follow the venue's instructions for televisions or media boxes without a normal browser. Do not copy another guest's registration or use a false identity to obtain access. A documented network arrangement is more reproducible than repeated attempts to trigger a welcome page through unrelated applications.
Leave with a clean account boundary
On a shared room television, sign out of any personal application using its documented procedure before departure. Forgetting a Wi-Fi network on your phone does not sign your account out of a different device. Check the actual device and account session rather than treating all travel credentials as one setting.
A useful support message names the venue network stage without publishing room or login details: the phone joined Wi-Fi, the portal was incomplete, ordinary browsing began after official registration, and the player result is recorded separately. That lets network and media support each address the part they control, with fewer unnecessary changes to a working account.
Questions answered
Does the Wi-Fi icon prove the hotel has granted internet access?
No. A captive network may require a separate authorised welcome or login step.
Will completing the hotel portal make casting work?
Not necessarily. Internet access and local device discovery are separate, and managed networks may isolate devices.
