Motion lines in an older recording: check interlacing before sharpening

Examine moving edges and source information before choosing a deinterlacing export for an authorised archive recording.

Resolution and frame rate differ

Look at motion rather than only a still scene

Older recordings can contain interlaced video. If the fields are presented without suitable handling, moving edges may show a comb-like pattern. A still scene can look comparatively normal, so judging one paused title card may miss the relevant characteristic. Before adding sharpening or buying a higher-resolution display, inspect a short authorised passage with clear movement and check the source's reported scan information.

Do not diagnose interlacing from every jagged edge. Scaling, compression, a damaged source and a poor screenshot can produce other artefacts. Keep the original file and note which player and output mode show the pattern. A player that deinterlaces during viewing may look different from an editor preview that exposes the stored fields.

A hypothetical archive comparison

Suppose a family owns an old home-event recording. A static room shot looks acceptable, but a person's moving arm shows horizontal combing on a computer. A second viewing path looks smoother. That difference motivates checking deinterlacing behaviour. It does not establish that the second display created extra source detail or that the first computer has insufficient internet speed; this is a local-file comparison.

Select a short sample containing the movement and preserve its original timing. Compare the original with one documented deinterlacing output. Avoid changing sharpness, resolution, noise reduction and frame rate simultaneously. Otherwise an apparently better result cannot be attributed to the deinterlacing decision, and a new motion defect may be overlooked.

Field order and output cadence matter

FFmpeg's deinterlacing filters expose choices such as field order and whether output is produced per frame or per field. Those are meaningful processing decisions, not interchangeable quality presets. An incorrect field-order assumption can harm motion. Use trustworthy source information where available and inspect the resulting movement rather than relying entirely on an automatic flag.

Choose an output cadence appropriate to the intended archive or delivery workflow. A file-size increase or a higher reported frame rate is not by itself evidence of improved detail. The goal is a coherent presentation of the source's temporal information. Keep the master source unchanged so a later, better-informed process can be performed without another generation of loss.

Review the result across several scenes

Inspect slow movement, fast movement, diagonal edges and on-screen text. Check that the chosen processing has not introduced distracting flicker or softened everything unnecessarily. Listen for audio alignment as well. A process that fixes one visible edge but creates a timing or sound problem is not a completed archive task.

Record the source identity, the specific filter and settings, tool version and destination test. Do not describe this as a test of an IPTV Europe stream or a particular television unless one was actually performed. The article's worked case is hypothetical; the reusable method is to inspect source structure, change one processing choice and verify the intended output.

Questions answered

Will sharpening remove interlacing combs?

Sharpening does not substitute for correct interlacing handling. First establish the source structure and compare a suitable deinterlacing process.

Does a higher output frame rate prove a better archive?

No. Inspect motion, field handling, detail and synchronisation. A numeric frame-rate change alone does not establish quality.
