Record the login stage and exact account
When a previously working Jellyfin login stops, first note the server and user involved. A client may retain an old server entry or another profile, so establish the intended destination before changing the password. Preserve the exact visible message privately and avoid repeated guesses that add more failed attempts.
If you are a viewer on someone else’s server, give its administrator the account name and the time of the failed attempt through the agreed private support route. Do not send a password. If you administer the server, use an already authorized administrator session to inspect that user’s state instead of deleting and recreating the library.
Check for a failed-attempt lockout
Jellyfin allows a configured maximum number of failed logins. Its documentation says a locked account remains unable to log in until an administrator unlocks it. A correct password entered after that point may therefore still fail; the client’s media cache is not the relevant first setting.
Review the user’s state and the configured policy from the administrator interface. If a lockout is confirmed, establish why the failed attempts happened before restoring access. An outdated saved password on a second device can make an apparent one-time mistake recur. Update only the devices and records that belong to the authorized user.
Verify the recovered account with a narrow test
After an authorized account-state correction, try one deliberate login from the intended client. Confirm the user name and expected libraries before opening media. A restored login is a separate success from playback, and a missing library afterward should be assessed through the profile’s access settings.
Retain a short private record of the confirmed cause and any saved-client credential that was updated. Avoid publishing usernames, server addresses or authentication logs without review. The expected outcome is a known account state and a repeatable authorized login, not an unbounded password reset or a claim that the server has been independently security tested.
Questions answered
Can the correct password still fail for a locked user?
Yes. Jellyfin documents that an administrator must unlock an account once the configured failed-attempt limit has locked it.
Does a missing user tile prove the account was deleted?
No. A user can be hidden from the login screen and require manual username entry. The administrator should distinguish that state from disabling or deleting an account.
