Jellyfin wrong remake: verify the provider identifier before refreshing

Disambiguate similarly named films or series with a real provider record and a targeted naming check.

Keep a record before reinstalling

Establish the actual work and edition

A title shared by several films or series can produce a plausible but wrong metadata match. Start with the year, original title and other reliable details from your own media records. The aim is to identify the work you actually have, not to choose whichever database page has the nicest artwork.

Keep one affected item as the example and preserve its current name. If its identity is uncertain, resolve that first from legitimate collection information. A filename inherited from an archive or another person’s catalogue is a clue, not proof. Avoid changing many similarly named items together before the first match is understood.

Find the identifier in the actual provider record

Jellyfin documents provider identifiers in movie and show filenames or folder names to improve identification. Its guide explains where identifiers are found in supported providers’ title records. Open the real provider page and confirm that its year, media type and title describe your item before copying the identifier.

Keep the provider name attached to the value in your notes. A numeric identifier without a provider is ambiguous, and an IMDb-style identifier belongs to a different namespace from a TMDb number. Do not create a number from an example in a tutorial. An example shows syntax; it does not identify your media.

Apply the supported naming information carefully

Use the syntax documented by Jellyfin for the relevant provider and keep the media extension unchanged. Where a movie has multiple versions, Jellyfin’s guide requires the provider information in both the parent folder and the matching filename prefix. Check that a targeted identification change has not accidentally broken an existing version relationship.

If you rename a directory used by other tools, consider those references before making the change. Keep the original path recorded privately and update your own library workflow deliberately. A correct provider identifier should solve identification; it should not introduce a missing-source error because another application still expects the old path.

Verify the match and any local override

Refresh the affected item through the server’s normal metadata route, then compare title, year and a second identifying detail. A correct poster alone is a weak check when two related editions share artwork. Open the item and confirm it is still the intended source file.

If the wrong value returns, inspect a local NFO file or another metadata writer before repeating a remote search. Preserve the real provider record and your targeted change in the case notes. The expected outcome is an accurate match for a known item, not a claim that metadata identifiers supply the film or authorize access to it.

Questions answered

Can I use a provider ID copied from a naming example?

Only if it actually identifies your media, which an arbitrary example usually does not. Open the correct provider’s real title record and verify it.

Will an identifier fix a missing video file?

No. It assists metadata identification. File access and playback remain separate checks.
