Jellyfin placeholder entries: catalogue a title without pretending it is playable

Use documented .disc placeholders deliberately and recognize why a poster is not proof that the server has a video.

A playlist name is only a label

Decide whether a catalogue-only item is intentional

A Jellyfin library can contain a title with artwork and metadata even when the server has no playable video for it. The developer documents media placeholders for that purpose. Before troubleshooting playback for such an entry, inspect whether it was deliberately created to represent an offline disc, unavailable item or other catalogue-only record.

This is useful for a personal collection when the physical location of an item matters, but the distinction should remain clear to viewers. Do not present a placeholder as a ready-to-watch film. A poster and synopsis establish a catalogue record; they do not establish possession of a playable file, server access or permission to stream the title.

Create only the documented reference file

Jellyfin’s route uses an empty file following the normal movie or episode naming convention with the .disc extension. The contents of that file are not used as video. Use a small test directory and an unmistakable title from your own catalogue before adding many entries.

Check that the operating system has not silently appended another text extension. A file displayed as Private Film.disc may actually have a hidden .txt suffix in some file-manager views. Inspect the complete filename through the system’s supported controls. Do not rename an actual movie to .disc; keep the catalogue reference separate from the real media.

Check the optional type and metadata

The documentation permits an optional recognized media-type label immediately before .disc. If you use one, describe the real catalogue medium accurately. Extra words inserted between that label and the final extension can stop the type from being recognized even though the item remains a placeholder.

After the library scan, inspect the entry’s title and status. Local artwork or NFO metadata can accompany a placeholder through the ordinary documented conventions. Use those fields to make the record useful, while keeping an external collection note for details such as a shelf location if your own workflow requires it. Avoid inventing an automated disc-loading feature.

Diagnose a mistaken playback expectation

If another user reports that the item will not play, check the placeholder status before investigating codecs or network throughput. The relevant next step may simply be to locate the real authorized media and add it through a proper library workflow. A faster server cannot turn an empty reference file into a video.

Keep a list of deliberate placeholders and review it when importing a collection from another application. This prevents catalogue-only entries from being counted as successful playback tests. The expected result is an accurate inventory with a visible distinction between available media and references, not an enlarged but misleading watchable catalogue.

Questions answered

Can a placeholder have artwork and still contain no video?

Yes. Jellyfin explicitly supports metadata and artwork for placeholder entries. Those details do not prove playable media exists.

Will adding a video URL inside the .disc file make it play?

Jellyfin says the placeholder file’s contents are not used. Follow the documented media-source route for actual video instead of treating the reference as a playlist.
