Decide what you actually want removed
Before running Kodi’s Clean library, state the intended outcome. Removing a title from the displayed library, deleting an original file and purging unused database records are different operations. A temporarily disconnected drive is another condition again. Keep the actual media location and its backup status clear.
Use one unwanted disposable test item if you need to learn the workflow. Do not start with a valued original or a whole collection. Record whether the source is currently available and whether the item is still present in the filesystem. The library view alone cannot establish those facts.
Read the current version’s cleanup description
Kodi’s current Media Library settings page describes Clean library as orphan-record cleanup and directs deliberate content removal through a separate method. It also describes protection for disconnected sources. This differs from the casual advice that cleanup always removes every unreachable title.
Check the Kodi version and the current removal documentation before following an old tutorial. Preserve a configuration and library backup where the operation matters. A database cleanup should have a defined purpose; it is not a general first response to a source login, network or decoder problem.
Apply the intended item operation first
Use the supported removal route for the actual version and read whether a prompt concerns the library entry or the underlying file. Confirm the selected item and path before accepting a file operation. Keep any deletion outside the scope of a diagnostic test unless the file is explicitly disposable.
After the intended removal, inspect the library and source separately. Then use cleanup only for its documented database purpose. For an original example, unplugging a travel drive for an evening should not be treated as a decision to erase its catalogue. Deliberate retirement of that collection requires a different documented action.
Verify the result without broadening the change
Check that the unwanted item has the intended status and that nearby wanted items remain accessible. Keep the source available for this verification if it is part of the ordinary setup. If an entry returns during a later scan, inspect the actual source and removal method rather than repeatedly invoking cleanup.
The expected outcome is a known removal and cleanup scope. Retain the backup and a short note of what changed. This procedure does not promise that cleanup compacts every database table, repairs a broken media source or replaces a separate backup of original recordings and files.
Questions answered
Does Clean library mean delete the original movie file?
Do not equate those actions. Read the actual item-removal prompt and current version’s cleanup documentation before confirming.
Should a temporarily disconnected drive be treated as retired content?
No. Establish the intended source state first. Temporary unavailability and deliberate collection removal are different cases.
