Define what the export should preserve
Kodi’s video-library export concerns metadata and artwork associated with its catalogue. It is different from copying the video originals. Begin by deciding whether the goal is local metadata for a future scan or another specific documented recovery workflow. Keep a separate backup of valuable source files and custom images.
Inspect one representative media directory and note any existing NFO and artwork files. If another program maintains them, record that ownership before exporting. An operation that writes alongside media can affect that shared workflow even when no video data is changed.
Choose the documented export method
Kodi’s video-export guide describes Separate Files as writing metadata NFO files beside the relevant media. It also explains the artwork and overwrite prompts. Open Export library through the current video-library settings and read the chosen method before continuing.
Do not treat an export as a selective single-item operation unless the documented route actually supports that scope. Keep the expected write locations clear. If the source directories are intentionally read-only, decide whether sidecar writing belongs in the workflow before granting access or changing storage permissions.
Protect original artwork from a cache export
The developer cautions that exported cached artwork can differ from original artwork and can overwrite or duplicate local images. Preserve custom originals and inspect the artwork choice deliberately. A cached poster appearing sharp on the TV is not proof that it is the best archival copy of the image.
Read Overwrite Old Files as a real scope choice. If existing NFO files are maintained elsewhere, determine which application should be authoritative before replacing them. For an original example, a custom synopsis written by a collection owner should not be overwritten simply because the export wizard reaches a final confirmation.
Inspect output and the later import route
After the deliberate export, inspect actual sidecar files and representative metadata. Keep the export method and choices in private notes. Kodi documents a normal scan of separate NFO files as a different import route from a single-file database export, so preserve the method with the artifact.
The expected outcome is known metadata output with protected originals and a matching recovery plan. It does not copy the film, preserve every source endpoint or prove a full installation restore. Avoid deleting the current database merely because an export folder exists; verify the intended recovery process separately.
Questions answered
Does exporting artwork guarantee an original-quality image copy?
No. Kodi distinguishes cached artwork from originals and cautions about exporting it over local assets.
Why retain the export method in the notes?
Separate sidecar files and a single-file export use different recovery routes. The output and later import must match.
