LibreELEC maintenance login: separate SSH access from share authentication

Use the owner’s configured credentials and inspect the enabled service before changing a media-source login.

Keep your credentials out of screenshots

Identify which service is rejecting the login

An appliance can expose an administration console and file shares through different services. Begin by recording whether the failure occurs in an SSH client, a computer’s share connection or Kodi’s own source browser. These are different authentication contexts even if the same device name appears.

Use only a device you own or administer with authorization. Keep the actual credentials private and preserve any working access route. Repeatedly entering a media-provider password into an operating-system login is not a useful test and can expose it in the wrong place.

Inspect the actual LibreELEC service state

LibreELEC’s security guide describes SSH and Samba configuration in its Settings add-on and distinguishes them from Kodi’s SMB client. Check that the intended service is enabled on the appliance. A timeout before a password prompt can be a different stage from an explicit rejected credential.

Use the owner’s current configured account details, not a default copied from an old webpage. The guide explains the appliance’s administrative account model and password controls. Keep a recoverable authorized maintenance arrangement before disabling an existing authentication method.

Keep file-share and console tests separate

For SSH, use the actual device address and the configured administrative authentication through a supported client. For Samba, use the actual share route and its configured credentials. Establish one successful service independently before interpreting a failure in the other.

If a known share opens but SSH does not, preserve that exact comparison. It establishes some network reachability without proving the SSH service or credential is correct. Similarly, a working console does not establish the permissions of every shared folder. Avoid a broad reset that erases both useful states.

Verify the intended maintenance policy

After a deliberate authorized change, test a fresh connection through the intended service while preserving a recovery route. If switching to key-based SSH authentication, verify the documented key setup before removing the working password method. Do not assume that copying a public-key file somewhere arbitrary activates it.

Return temporary services to their intended ordinary state after maintenance and retain the final policy privately. The expected outcome is understandable service access on the owner’s appliance. It does not supply credentials, authorize access to another person’s system or repair an unrelated television-source account.

Questions answered

Does a working Samba connection prove SSH credentials are correct?

No. It proves a result for that share route. SSH is a separate service and authentication context.

Which password belongs in a media provider’s login field?

Use the provider’s authorized account details. Appliance administration, file-share and media-source credentials should remain distinguishable.
