mpv screenshots: choose the video image or the displayed window

Select a screenshot mode deliberately when documenting subtitles, scaled output or an on-screen playback message.

Keep your credentials out of screenshots

Decide what the screenshot must prove

A screenshot used to report a subtitle issue may need different content from a clean image of your own video. Decide whether the useful evidence is the decoded picture, the selected subtitle or the displayed window with its on-screen information. These are different capture purposes.

Choose a non-sensitive frame from media you are permitted to share. Review the window for private filenames, account details or other information before capture. A player screenshot can be a useful diagnostic artifact, but posting it is a separate decision. Keep the original image private until its contents have been inspected.

Use the mode documented for the intended evidence

Default s captures a screenshot, S omits subtitles where supported, and Control+s captures the displayed window. Pick the intended evidence first. For an original diagnostic example, a clipped subtitle needs the visible line and edge, while a clean frame for your own editing notes may need neither interface text nor subtitle content.

Pause on a recognizable frame and take one capture using the intended mode. Inspect the resulting file rather than assuming the shortcut created exactly what you wanted. Output support can matter, particularly for the subtitle-free route. Record the observed image content and avoid making a universal claim from one output configuration.

Compare images without changing the source

If the task is to show a rendering difference, capture the same paused frame through the relevant modes. Keep the player size and selected subtitle track fixed. An image of the displayed window can include scaling and interface elements that a video-image capture does not represent in the same way.

Open the saved images in an appropriate viewer and compare their dimensions and visible contents. A screenshot is not a direct measurement of the source’s bitrate, display HDR behavior or real-time motion. Describe only what it demonstrates, such as a subtitle clipped at the window edge or a visible on-screen error.

Store the artifact with useful context

Keep the capture with the mpv version, source type, selected track and screenshot mode. Use a descriptive local filename that excludes secret stream tokens. If the image is for support, accompany it with the shortest reproduction and the relevant settings rather than asking a screenshot to explain an entire playback route.

After review, share only the evidence needed with the appropriate recipient through the chosen support process. The expected outcome is a precise image artifact for a defined question. It does not prove that a network source is authorized or replace the fuller log and reproduction that a technical investigation may require.

Questions answered

What should I inspect in the saved image?

Confirm the intended frame, visible track text or interface message, and any unwanted private information before using it as evidence.

Can a screenshot prove the movie’s bitrate or HDR display behavior?

No. It can document visible image content, but those properties need their own measurements and playback-path evidence.
