Preserve the setting and file you expected to load
If an mpv.net preference appears ignored, record the exact setting, file path and installed package. A computer can retain an old portable folder and an ordinary installation at the same time. Editing one copy does not establish that the executable you launched reads it.
Choose one harmless observable preference for the comparison and keep a copy of the original configuration. Do not begin by replacing every script and output option. A narrow test should distinguish the active file without creating an unrelated playback failure.
Use the documented path priority
The manual lists MPVNET_HOME, the executable’s portable_config directory and the account’s AppData mpv.net folder in priority order. It provides Config, Open Config Folder to reveal the active location. Use that actual application route rather than guessing from a familiar directory.
Compare the revealed path with the file you edited. Keep personal directory details private in screenshots. If an environment override was set deliberately, preserve its purpose before changing it. Removing it can affect more than one launch shortcut or portable workflow.
Choose the file that owns the setting
The project separates engine options in mpv.conf, frontend options in mpvnet.conf and bindings in input.conf. Identify the actual setting’s documented owner before moving it. A valid filename with an unrelated option can look like a path problem while the path itself is correct.
Apply one justified change and use the installed build’s required reload or normal restart. Open the same known local sample and observe the intended effect. Keep the file, executable and test action constant while comparing.
Retain the active-path result
Once the effect is verified, record the package and active directory in setup notes. Remove or archive only truly obsolete copies through your own deliberate file-management process. Do not delete a separate portable configuration merely because it was not active in this test.
The expected outcome is an understood configuration source for the launched executable. It does not certify every imported option, synchronize settings to another player or prove that changing a source URL is necessary. Preserve the known baseline before adding further customizations.
Questions answered
Why can two files named mpv.conf produce confusion?
The active executable can read a different configuration directory. Reveal that location through the documented application route.
Which file should hold frontend-specific preferences?
Use the project’s documented file distinction. Engine options, frontend options and key bindings have separate configuration roles.
