Start from the game on the television or computer
Netflix distinguishes games played on a television or computer from games downloaded and played on a mobile device. In the first workflow, a phone or tablet can act as the controller for the game on the larger screen. Begin with the game’s Play Game control on the intended supported screen, then follow its launch sequence until the controller QR code appears. The publisher notes that some games show that code after an initial launch screen. Installing a mobile game with a similar name is a different action and is not the documented controller-pairing step.
Match the controller app to the phone
The current controller instructions require the Netflix app on Android phones or tablets. For iPhone or iPad, they require iOS or iPadOS 17 or later and the Netflix Game Controller app. Use the official prompted route after scanning the code, rather than assume both platforms use the same application. The Android instructions explicitly include installing Netflix if needed, then scanning again. In a hypothetical family session, identify each player’s phone platform before beginning so a missing application is not mistaken for a broken television. The relevant controller installation should be completed before judging whether pairing succeeded.
Pair each player without treating it as account migration
Netflix says each player on television needs a mobile phone or tablet as a controller. It does not require the controller device to be signed into a particular Netflix account, and says account information is not shared through that connection. This is a controller relationship, not a way to transfer a membership to another person’s phone. Computer play can also use a keyboard and mouse where the game supports that route; physical gamepads are not currently supported by the documented controller workflow. For a particular title, follow its own player and control instructions instead of assuming every game has the same number of players.
Diagnose scanning and disconnection at the appropriate stage
If the code will not scan, Netflix recommends changing the distance, tapping to focus and using the native camera rather than a third-party scanner. If camera permission is off, review the relevant app permission instead of regenerating the game session repeatedly. Once paired, a controller can disconnect when its screen turns off; turning it back on may reconnect, with another scan sometimes necessary. Check those observations before calling the large-screen game unresponsive. Distinguish the QR link not opening, the required controller app not installed and a previously working controller going to sleep. They are different stages with different documented next checks.
Questions answered
Must the controller phone use the same Netflix login as the television?
Netflix says no particular Netflix account sign-in is required on the device to connect it as a controller.
Is downloading a Netflix mobile game the same as pairing a TV controller?
No. Netflix documents mobile games and phone-as-controller play as different workflows.
