OBS has no VLC Video source: inspect the library dependency

Check the documented VLC dependency before treating a missing OBS source type as a damaged scene collection.

A player organises the experience

Identify what is actually absent

A missing source type in the add menu is different from an existing VLC source containing an empty or failing playlist. Record which case you have. Reimporting a scene collection cannot establish that the computer has the media libraries needed to create its sources.

Follow the dependency documented by OBS

The OBS Media Sources page says VLC Video uses installed VLC libraries and requires VLC to appear as an available source. It specifically pairs 64-bit OBS with 64-bit VLC. Check the genuine installed application and architecture rather than downloading an unrelated plugin from a search result.

Keep that check separate from media access. Installing a media player does not supply recordings, a channel account or rights to present someone else’s work. Once the source type is available, use one small owned clip as the input.

Retain the first meaningful result

If the source appears after the dependency is corrected, record that as a source-availability result. Then inspect one playlist item. If the type remains unavailable, report the actual OBS platform, build and installed VLC architecture; avoid saying only that video fails.

The practical stopping point is narrow: either the source type can be added or its dependency remains unresolved. No installation or playlist playback was tested for this article.

Questions answered

Can an imported collection install VLC libraries?

An import is not evidence that the required local dependency is installed.

Does this article supply a VLC plugin download?

No. Use genuine OBS and VideoLAN distribution information for the actual platform.
