Plex DVR ad markers and permanent removal have different results

Choose the intended recording-processing mode and understand why a completed capture can still be waiting for analysis.

Identify the recording-processing stage

Plex’s commercial-processing help applies to programmes captured with Plex DVR. It describes analysis after recording finishes and before the result enters the viewing library. During this work, Recording Schedule can already show 100 percent. That display is therefore not enough to prove that every processing stage is finished. Begin with the actual programme and whether the issue is a pending library entry, a missing skip button or footage already removed from a file. Those observations need different checks. The documentation does not turn an unrelated streaming catalogue or playlist into a Plex DVR recording.

Inspect the actual DVR mode before changing it globally

The published configuration route is Plex Web App, Settings, Server, Live TV and DVR, then DVR Settings and Remove Commercials. Despite that section’s name, it contains distinct choices: Disabled, Detect and delete commercials, and Detect commercials and mark for skip. Read the complete selected option. The help describes the global control as applying to scheduled recordings, while the DVR FAQ also identifies individual-recording options. A hypothetical administrator checking one film should therefore establish whether its recording rule or the global preference was used. Do not change every scheduled programme merely to investigate a missing playback control on one item.

Choose markers when the original recording must remain intact

Plex describes detection and marking as leaving the original recording unaltered. A supported player can offer Skip Ads at those markers, allowing the viewer to choose whether to jump forward. Its separate player settings can also control manual or automatic skipping where offered. Detection is not perfect, so a marker is an estimated navigation boundary rather than proof that the identified section contains no programme material. If the precise cut matters, inspect the boundary on an available recording before relying on it for later viewing. The existence of markers does not mean the video file has been shortened.

Treat deletion as a file change, not another button style

The Detect and delete choice physically removes the detected portions. Plex warns that incorrectly removed programme footage cannot be restored through that process. That is materially different from choosing whether a player shows a Skip Ads button. If preserving the recording matters, establish the intended file-preservation approach before selecting deletion. For a delayed library entry, keep the analysis stage in the report rather than assume the capture failed at 100 percent. For missing footage, retain the selected mode and programme identity. These details explain what happened without promising perfect detection, a fixed processing duration or recovery of sections that were permanently removed.

Questions answered

Does a Plex DVR recording at 100 percent necessarily appear in the library immediately?

No. The commercial-processing help says it can still be undergoing analysis before being added for viewing.

Does marking commercials remove those sections from the recording?

No. Plex distinguishes preserving the original with skip markers from physically deleting detected sections.
