Plan the new order on a recoverable copy
Use an authorized local reference movie and preserve the original before editing. Write a short scene order such as introduction, example, conclusion, then identify the intended new order. This makes the editing decision explicit instead of relying on thumbnail appearance alone.
Apple’s QuickTime instructions distinguish splitting a movie into clips from rearranging existing clips. A movie represented by one clip has nothing to reorder until boundaries exist. Opening Show Clips is therefore an inspection step, not proof that the file already contains the desired segments.
Create and inspect the boundaries
The documented route is View, Show Clips, position the playhead at an intended boundary and use Edit, Split Clip. Repeat only for boundaries the planned edit requires. Small playhead adjustments can help inspect the exact point before applying a split.
After each boundary, play a little before and after it. Check the picture and sentence continuity together. For an original example, a demonstration may have a spoken explanation extending beyond the visual scene change; a thumbnail-based split alone could separate the explanation from its example.
Rearrange the clips and review every join
Apple documents dragging the clips into the intended order and choosing Done. Compare the resulting sequence with the written plan, then inspect each new join. A correct first frame and final frame do not establish that the intervening order is right.
Save the accepted result under a distinguishable name and reopen it to review the same boundaries. Keep the original until the new order and audio continuity are understood. This is a procedure for a local reference edit; it does not repair a network playlist or change the broadcast order of a live source.
Questions answered
Why is there nothing to drag into a new order?
Inspect whether the movie is still one clip. The documented rearrangement task follows splitting it into the intended parts.
What should I check after moving a clip?
Inspect the new joins, including spoken continuity, and compare the complete order with the written plan before accepting the saved copy.
