Locking a Sling recording protects space, not its expiry date

Read the storage action and the nine-month recording limit separately before relying on a locked programme for later viewing.

Identify which kind of loss you are trying to prevent

Sling’s current DVR guidance describes Lock as protection against removal when recording space runs out. It separately says recordings remain time-bound, with a nine-month limit for the paid DVR arrangement. Lock does not extend that lifespan. A viewer preserving a favourite film should therefore ask two questions: could incoming recordings displace it because storage is full, and is the copy approaching its own expiry? Solving the first does not solve the second. This article concerns those DVR controls; it does not apply a paid recording period to the separate Freestream allowance.

Use the recording’s own Lock control where applicable

The documented route is the DVR tab, the recorded programme and LOCK. Check the exact episode or film before choosing it, particularly when a series folder contains several airings. Sling says Unlimited DVR subscribers do not have the Lock control because they do not run out of recording space. The absence of that option on Unlimited is therefore not, by itself, evidence of an account fault. It also does not mean unlimited retention: the publisher explicitly keeps the time limit separate. Inspect the actual plan and programme rather than using a screenshot from another DVR arrangement to predict the menu.

Read the expiry warning and plan another airing if needed

Sling says it labels recordings beginning 30 days before expiry so viewers can rewatch them or arrange a new recording. If preserving later access matters, check a genuine future airing and its Record option rather than assume a lock renews the existing copy. A new capture depends on another available broadcast and applicable recording permissions. The current help also distinguishes recording all episodes from recording only new episodes, so a rerun may be excluded by a new-only series choice. Check Scheduled after making the intended choice. Neither a programme search result nor a future guide tile is confirmation that a replacement has been scheduled.

Review a storage downgrade before it changes the library

The same DVR help warns that removing Unlimited DVR while over the included storage allowance triggers deletion from oldest to newest until the recordings fit. Treat that as a separate inventory decision before changing the add-on. Inspect the programmes you still intend to watch and their actual expiry notices. Do not use Lock as an assumed exception to every consequence of a plan change. For a household record, keep the action precise: a storage lock was applied, a future recording was scheduled, or an add-on was changed. These are different protections and none turns the cloud recording into a permanent purchased film.

Questions answered

Does a Sling Lock extend a recording past nine months?

No. Sling explicitly says locking does not extend the recording’s lifespan.

Why can Lock be absent on Unlimited DVR?

Sling says Unlimited DVR does not run out of recording space, so the space-protection Lock option is not available.
