Keep a SONUMA teaching capsule separate from its archive source

Distinguish a contemporary educational presentation from the historical broadcast material it selects and contextualises.

A teaching capsule adds another editorial moment

SONUMA’s academic page describes educational work with RTBF and e-classe, and PECA’rchives capsules connecting historical archives with contemporary questions. A capsule can be a useful introduction, but it has its own selection and framing. The historical footage and the present explanation belong to different moments.

Before viewing, decide which layer answers your question. A capsule may explain why an archive matters today. The original broadcast can show how a subject was presented at the time. Those are related purposes, but one should not silently replace the other.

Make a two-part record

In your notes, identify the contemporary educational resource first. Then record any original programme, date and reference supplied for the archive it uses. If the capsule does not provide enough information to identify a clip precisely, keep that limitation visible.

When watching, notice where the presentation changes from historical material to current narration or commentary. Attribute a statement to the layer that actually supplies it. A modern explanation of what happened later should not be remembered as knowledge held by the original reporter.

Likewise, a selected historical sentence may not represent the whole original programme. If the question concerns its complete argument or news order, locate the fuller record rather than treating an educational extract as a complete broadcast.

Use the appropriate research route

SONUMA describes a research station in Liège for academic consultation alongside its public and teaching services. The existence of that route is a reminder that online teaching resources do not establish the full scope of the holdings. A missing web video is not enough evidence to declare that the original was never preserved.

For initial study, the exact resource links and your own attributed observations may be sufficient. For a deeper project, prepare the original programme clues and the unanswered question before exploring the relevant consultation route. This article does not promise access, turnaround, copying rights or a particular research outcome; those depend on the archive’s current conditions and the material requested.
