Choose the background format for a background question

SRF introduced Kids News spezial as a longer background magazine alongside its weekly children’s news. Its December 2025 launch describes a 25-minute single-topic format with more space for stories, questions and answers. It is useful when your question needs sustained attention to one subject rather than a tour of the week’s headlines.

The launch edition concerned poverty in Switzerland and brought together a child reporter’s interview, questions from a partner class and reporting around people’s experiences. Use this as a concrete example of the format. The launch notice’s plans for later programmes do not establish which editions are currently available.

Listen for the scope of each contribution

A personal account explains what happened to that person. A class question shows what the children wanted clarified. Explanatory reporting connects a wider process or context. Write those roles beside your notes instead of merging all three into a single unattributed account.

For instance, a contributor describing childhood experience can illuminate a subject without showing how frequently the experience occurs today. A question about what happens in school can make an issue concrete without standing for every pupil. The programme’s framing and any supporting information need to be examined separately.

This approach keeps a discussion respectful and precise. Viewers can talk about what a contributor chose to tell the programme without being asked to provide equivalent personal disclosures in the room. The viewing task is to understand the report.

Follow one question to its answer

Choose a question from the programme and identify which parts help answer it. If the answer remains incomplete, write the gap as a later research question rather than filling it from an unrelated headline. A longer format offers room for context, not an obligation to settle every issue.

SRF’s launch notice also points teachers towards accompanying material. Match any resource to the edition actually selected. Before a later session, inspect the current programme page and availability, because a historical launch date and a plan for future output are different from the catalogue now on offer.

Questions answered

Is Kids News spezial simply the weekly news with a longer runtime?

SRF introduced it as a single-topic background magazine alongside the weekly children’s news.

Can one contributor’s experience establish how common something is?

It establishes the account given by that contributor. Frequency needs separate evidence and should not be inferred from an interview alone.
