Swiftfin player engine: compare the feature you need on the installed build

Use the actual MPV or AVPlayer selection and verify one task instead of assuming the two engines expose identical controls.

Choose one required playback feature

A player-engine comparison is useful only when the task is defined. Choose the actual requirement, such as an audio offset, secondary subtitle or video handoff to an AirPlay receiver. These are different features, not a single compatibility score.

Record the Swiftfin build and the current engine before changing it. The repository’s current documentation can describe newer work than an older installed release. If the documented engine choices are absent, inspect that release’s support rather than inventing a hidden menu or assuming the hardware is defective.

Use the documented engine control where available

Swiftfin’s current issue guide gives Settings, Advanced, Video Player and Engine. Its player page distinguishes MPV and AVPlayer capabilities, including offset and AirPlay-video differences. Use the installed build’s actual options and retain the initial choice.

Keep one authorized local-library item and its selected tracks fixed. A different encode can change the result independently of the engine. If the task involves a receiver, retain the same receiver and network during the first comparison.

Verify the requested operation explicitly

After the deliberate selection, open the same item and exercise the one feature. Record whether the control appears, whether it performs the intended action and whether ordinary playback remains usable. A menu item existing is not proof that the complete route works.

For an original comparison, testing an offset means checking the same dialogue before and after a small adjustment. Testing receiver handoff means verifying where video and sound actually emerge. Keep screen mirroring separate from a native video handoff; a picture on another screen can have arrived through a different mechanism.

Retain the useful configuration and evidence limit

Check another short passage and the ordinary stop-and-reopen behavior before keeping the choice. If the engine change affects server conversion, record the active server session as a separate observation. Do not assume a client toggle guarantees direct play for every file.

The expected outcome is a justified engine choice for a particular feature and build. It does not certify every Apple device, container or HDR profile. Preserve the initial configuration and report the actual engine, source and first failed stage if further support is needed.

Questions answered

Should I assume MPV and AVPlayer expose identical features?

No. Check the current feature table and the installed controls for the specific task.

Why keep screen mirroring separate from AirPlay video?

They can use different delivery mechanisms. Confirm the operation actually used and the output observed.
