Identify the real folder and library result
If an Android folder contains videos but VLC’s indexed collection does not show them as expected, keep one known file as the case. Confirm the file exists through the device’s supported storage route and note where it is stored. A local folder, removable storage and a remote share are different inputs.
Inspect whether the file can be opened directly before changing the library scan selection. A directly readable item with no indexed entry gives different evidence from a storage location the application cannot access at all. Keep permission and indexing questions separate.
Read the documented inclusion rule
VideoLAN’s Android General Settings page describes Media library folders and explains that selecting a parent includes its descendants; child exclusions require first deselecting the parent. Inspect the actual selection tree in the installed build rather than repeatedly tapping a disabled child box.
For an original example, a parent named Media may contain both Family clips and Work exports. If only one branch should be indexed, decide that scope before selecting the broad parent. Keep the actual media organization unchanged while testing the selection logic.
Choose a narrow scope and rescan deliberately
Select the intended folder arrangement and use the current application’s supported refresh or startup scan behavior. The documentation also describes automatic rescan at startup. Record which action you use so a delayed result is not mistaken for an immediate failure.
Return to the known item and inspect whether it appears in the collection. If it appears under an unexpected grouping, record that as a presentation or metadata result. Adding another duplicate file merely to make the list change can obscure whether the original selection worked.
Verify the ordinary storage workflow
After the first result, check how new files normally reach that folder and whether the intended scan route catches them. Keep the source path and selected scope in private device notes. A folder temporarily unavailable during a scan should not automatically be treated as intentionally removed media.
The expected outcome is an understood indexed-folder scope. It does not copy files, change Android’s system permissions or guarantee access to every external drive. Preserve the known direct-file result if the library view still needs investigation.
