Prepare a Wales Broadcast Archive viewing list before a Clip Corner visit

Use remote catalogue records to prepare local archive viewing while distinguishing the online subset from location-required material.

Search from home with the access distinction in mind

The National Library of Wales’s Watch and Listen help says catalogue records can be accessed remotely, while only a selection of the media can be played from anywhere. The wider collection requires an NLW account with Reader’s Ticket sign-in and presence in a Clip Corner. Registration alone does not remove that location requirement.

Start the research at home. Use the title, subject, date clues and available description to identify promising records before committing local viewing time. A record that cannot be played remotely may still supply enough information to decide that it belongs on the visit list.

Build a list that preserves the reason for each item

The help describes account-based playlists as a way to save items for later viewing, including items that need a Clip Corner. Alongside each candidate, keep a short research question: a person you hope to hear, an event you want to compare or a particular programme segment. A long list of vaguely related titles is harder to use during a limited session.

Inspect each item’s availability rather than assuming a curated playlist has one access status. The Library explicitly says its curated collections can mix material available online with material restricted to Clip Corners. A shared collection heading is not evidence that all its items will play at home.

Plan the local part around what remains unseen

Watch the publicly available subset in advance when it is relevant. Then reserve the local session for material you could not inspect remotely, rather than repeating every step of the search. Verify the current arrangements for the Clip Corner you intend to use; the research here did not test a visit, account or terminal.

After viewing an item locally, add an observation tied to that specific record. Keep a promising title separate from a confirmed relevant passage. This makes the list useful when one candidate turns out to concern a different person or a different event with a similar name.

The Library’s granular help states that registration is unnecessary for remote catalogue access and the public online subset, but necessary for playlists and wider local playback. Use those distinctions to prepare the session. A catalogue discovery, an account feature and a place-based viewing entitlement are three parts of this particular research workflow.

Questions answered

Will registering let me watch every item from home?

No. The Library’s help requires Clip Corner presence as well as account sign-in for the wider collection.

Can I research records before visiting?

Yes. The help says the metadata records are accessible remotely and playlists can prepare later local viewing.
