Guide data engineering notes

An XMLTV file can parse while its channel mapping fails

Add a semantic channel-reference check to an owned XMLTV importer without guessing from a display name.

An EPG is programme information

Parsing answers only part of the question

An importer can read a structurally acceptable XMLTV document and still lack a usable mapping for a programme's channel value. The official XMLTV DTD comments identify a reference constraint that the DTD itself does not express. Keep this application-level check explicit.

Build the set of accepted channel identities from the import contract. It may come from channel declarations, a separately maintained mapping, or a documented combination. Since channel declarations are optional in the format, do not assume their absence automatically makes every programme invalid.

Quarantine the uncertain reference

In an invented feed, a programme references alpha-east while the configured map knows alpha-west. Do not silently attach it to the first display name containing Alpha. Preserve the raw identifier, source feed, programme start and reason for the unresolved result.

Decide whether unresolved rows block the release or enter a review queue. That is an importer policy, not a new XMLTV requirement. Report affected channels and time coverage so a reviewer can assess the real gap rather than only a total error count.

Release a corrected mapping carefully

A mapping correction can move many programme entries at once. Preview the affected interval and channel before accepting it. Keep the previous mapping version so the change can be reversed without reconstructing names from memory.

Separate a syntax validation result from a reference-validation result in the import report. Neither proves that the listed programme actually airs or that playback is available. This example describes an owned data pipeline; no IPTV Europe guide was imported.

Questions answered

Does a successful XML parse prove every programme is mapped?

No. Channel references and the application's mapping need a separate check.

Must every XMLTV file include channel declarations?

The format permits them to be absent. The importer still needs a documented identity contract.
