Keep the individual Sámi language with the programme

Use Yle’s stated radio-language scope and named programme routes without assuming every Sámi video has three versions.

A logo is identity evidence

A service name is broader than an episode label

Yle’s published description of Sápmi identifies North Sámi, Inari Sámi and Skolt Sámi in its radio provision. It separately points to television news and named children’s and youth programmes. That description establishes a multilingual service; it does not say that every television programme has a version in all three languages.

When choosing something for a particular speaker, retain the individual language name as part of the requirement. “Something in Sámi” may be too broad for the actual listening or viewing. Begin with the relevant programme page and the language information it supplies.

Follow the medium as well as the language

A radio programme, a television bulletin and a child-focused show are different editorial forms. If the need is sustained listening in a named language, the radio route can be relevant even when the first search result is a television thumbnail. If the task depends on a visual story, an audio-only item answers another need.

Yle’s description names Binna Bánna, Unna Junna and Sohkarsohkka among the service’s output. Treat those titles as discovery clues. Inspect the selected item for its own audience, language and format rather than extending the service-wide description to every episode.

The interface language is another separate detail. A Finnish description can lead to Sámi-language content; it does not establish that the programme is spoken in Finnish or that a Finnish translation track is available. Use the item’s stated edition information.

Preserve the precise choice

For a household or teaching list, record programme, episode, medium and language as labelled. Leave uncertain details open. Guessing a language variety from a broad brand label can produce an unsuitable recommendation even when the subject is right.

This article relies on Yle’s 2025 service description for its published scope. Current episode availability and access options require the current programme page. Keep that dated source separate from any later catalogue check, and avoid turning a general description of three-language radio output into an unsupported claim about a particular television edition.

Questions answered

Does Yle’s three-language radio provision mean every television show has three audio versions?

No. The service description distinguishes radio provision from television output. Check the individual programme.

Can the page’s Finnish description establish the spoken programme language?

No. Inspect the item’s own language and edition information.
