The satellite SD service ended in November 2025

ZDF’s official reception notice states that 3sat’s satellite standard-definition distribution ended on 18 November 2025, alongside several other named services. A receiver favourite saved from that older SD service is different from the continuing HD channel. A blank old entry does not, by itself, establish that 3sat has closed.

Keep the receiving method in the diagnosis. The broadcaster’s notice primarily concerns satellite reception; cable providers can have their own changes and customer instructions. An internet player or cable box should not be treated as though it necessarily exposes the same satellite service entry or follows an identical retuning procedure.

A name without SD is not conclusive evidence of HD reception

The notice explains that the old SD service names were extended with SD, while some receivers might not have adopted that name change automatically. A favourite labelled only 3sat can therefore be an old stored entry. Inspect the receiver’s actual service information rather than deciding solely from the friendly name.

Check the current official reception guidance for the HD route and the instructions for the equipment in use. Save useful existing settings before making changes, and ask the responsible receiving provider where the new entry belongs. This keeps a historical SD favourite separate from a programme-specific issue on a working HD service.

Kulturzeit and nano are named programmes within the channel

3sat’s programme information identifies Kulturzeit as its weekday cultural magazine and nano as its science magazine. These are programmes inside the channel, not alternate names for the entire service. A search for one magazine should keep its edition date rather than treating the first result as today’s whole 3sat schedule.

A current programme grid and a press notice also answer different questions. The grid supplies the selected date’s sequence; a notice can describe a first transmission or a particular production. A documentary’s production year, television premiere and later repeat can differ while all remaining legitimate identifiers of that same work.

Match the specific cultural item after reception is resolved

3sat’s press programme pages distinguish films, documentaries, operas and other appointments, with first-transmission labels where applicable. Preserve the title and intended date when looking for the complete programme. A trailer, short interview or performance extract is a different item from the full film or concert.

A useful enquiry names 3sat HD or the actual online route, the programme, date and receiving location. If the old SD favourite is the only failing entry, describe that fact separately. If the channel works but one recording is absent, investigate that item’s current page rather than repeating a reception change that has already been completed.

Questions answered

Does a blank old 3sat SD favourite mean the channel ended?

No. The satellite SD distribution ended; check the continuing HD service through the appropriate receiving route.

Does a favourite lacking SD in its name prove it is the HD service?

No. ZDF notes that some receivers may not have adopted the old SD name change automatically.
