EbS and EbS+: raw institutional coverage and edited extracts

Choose EU institutional source footage by event, media category and available audio, with stockshots kept distinct from a complete briefing.

Understand the purpose of the feed

The European Commission’s Audiovisual Service describes EbS and EbS+ as EU institutional television information services supplying raw material, live coverage and edited extracts. This is source coverage for following institutions and producing information about their work. It has a different editorial role from a broadcaster’s independently assembled news bulletin.

A viewer can use a live institutional feed to follow an event in greater depth, then compare the account given in a later news programme. Keep the source clearly identified. A longer unvoiced recording offers more of an event, but its camera selection and event boundaries still shape what you can observe.

Choose the media category that fits the question

The official FAQ’s search description distinguishes categories such as stockshots, clips, video news, full midday briefings and briefings by topic, and describes date, language, topic, person and location fields. These are documented metadata distinctions. The current interactive search controls were not checked, and the FAQ contains legacy technical passages, so its control layout should not be treated as a newly observed walkthrough.

Use a full briefing when the question depends on how a spokesperson answered. Use a topic segment when the discussion is clearly identified and enough surrounding context is retained. A stockshot can illustrate a place or activity, but should not be described as footage of a particular meeting unless its record establishes that connection.

Check the audio at item level

The FAQ says stockshots carry original sound without interpretation or added music, while selected news and clips can have multiple language versions. Multilingual live and on-demand items offer a choice when available. Consequently, the language used by the website does not establish the language of every media file.

For an important statement, keep the item identifier and chosen audio language. Distinguish a speaker’s original words from interpretation. If two people speak different languages during a press conference, a single selected listening track may provide a convenient account without being the original voice throughout.

Use the schedule and replay as separate stages

The official FAQ links EbS and EbS+ schedules and describes a delay before a transmitted item becomes an on-demand sequence. For planning, check the current event listing; for later analysis, use the published item and its metadata. A brief absence immediately after an event is not evidence that an archive item has been permanently lost.

Preserve the complete item reference alongside any passage you discuss. This guide omits legacy satellite-tuning advice and does not promise a specific replay-processing time, format on every event or reuse permission. The published FAQ was read; actual live feeds and downloads were not tested.

Questions answered

Does a stockshot necessarily show the event named in my article?

No. Verify its own metadata. Stockshots are a separate media category and may supply general illustrative footage.

Does an English website page mean the video contains English audio?

No. Inspect the language versions offered for that specific item or live transmission.
