RTP Arquivos: search a subject across broadcast heritage

Use programme, collection and cross-media search in RTP’s public archive without treating every result as a complete television episode.

The archive can answer more than a recent-replay question

RTP describes Arquivos as a public portal to its audiovisual heritage, with simple and advanced cross-media search, thematic collections and programmes organized by genre. It is a useful destination when the subject is historical footage or a remembered production rather than a recent episode on the live schedule.

Write down the strongest clue you have: a programme, person, place or event. Keep a guessed date flexible. A report can discuss an earlier event, and a later retrospective can reuse older footage. Those are different dates in a research question, even when a short search result displays only one.

Choose a collection when the subject is broad

A thematic collection can introduce a person or historical subject through selected material. A programme grouping can help when the production’s title is known. A general search is useful when the clue could occur across several formats. Choose among these approaches instead of repeating the same broad keyword indefinitely.

Inspect whether the result is video, audio, photography or text. An audio interview can provide valuable context without containing the visual sequence you remembered. A still image is not a failed video. Treat each record as the media item it actually describes.

Retain the catalogue’s context

After finding a plausible item, note its title, identifier, dates shown and the passage relevant to your question. Separate a date explicitly stated in the record from one you infer from the scene. If the record describes a later programme containing earlier images, keep both levels in the note.

Watch beyond the selected moment where playback is available. The introduction or ending may explain who is speaking, why the footage was chosen or whether the programme is a retrospective. A visually appealing excerpt can be misleading when detached from that framing.

A growing portal is not the entire physical collection

RTP describes progressive catalogue publication. An empty search does not establish that a recording never existed. Try a broader date range or another reliable clue, then retain the unsuccessful search terms if further research is needed.

The archive also distinguishes public viewing from requests for copies or licensing. Keep an official item link with your notes when sharing a discovery. Access to a preview or catalogue record does not itself establish permission to reuse footage in a new production.
