Start with a programme that offers description
RTP’s audiodescrição page explains its alternative-audio service and gives separate instructions for cable television, terrestrial reception and RTP Play. The access feature belongs to a qualifying programme; a television’s ability to show an audio menu does not establish that every programme carries description.
Choose a title explicitly indicated for description and check its edition. A dramatic work’s dialogue may be easy to hear while important actions remain visual. Description is intended to add that missing information, rather than simply making the original voices louder.
Cable reception has a state to recheck
For its described cable route, RTP instructs viewers to select the audio track labelled Audiodescrição through the set-top box and says the choice needs reactivation after changing away and back. If narration stops after browsing channels, revisit that selection before judging the programme itself.
Use the same scene for a comparison if a recording is available. In live viewing, wait for a meaningful quiet visual passage rather than expecting description during continuous speech. Note whether the selected track changed when you returned to the channel. That observation directly addresses the documented behaviour.
Terrestrial television and RTP Play use other controls
RTP directs terrestrial viewers to the receiver manufacturer’s relevant audio settings, while RTP Play supplies an alternative-audio choice in its player. Do not apply a set-top-box button sequence to the app simply because both screens show the same channel name.
If the programme is prepared on another screen, record which route was used successfully. Antenna television, a cable box and an app are separate receiving arrangements. A helpful household note names the control that actually worked in that arrangement, without claiming it applies to every RTP distributor.
Make the selection easy to confirm
Before a longer programme, listen briefly and verify that important actions are described. Save the programme page and access requirement if watching later. If another household member takes over, explain that the need is visual description, not translated dialogue or ordinary subtitles.
If an unexpected extra voice appears, preserve the current audio label before changing it. After selecting the ordinary presentation, confirm the result during a comparable passage. A moment with no extra narration cannot prove a setting has changed, because a described track naturally includes periods without descriptive speech.
Questions answered
Does the cable description choice necessarily survive changing channels?
RTP’s guidance says to reactivate it after changing away and returning.
Should RTP Play use the cable box’s audio instructions?
No. Use the player’s own alternative-audio control.
