Choose the resource before choosing the programme

Schooltv is an educational database, rather than a single continuous school television channel. Its official help distinguishes short clips, programme episodes, playlists, interactive school plates, scroll stories and teaching materials. A search for a subject can therefore return resources that ask the learner to do quite different things.

Begin with the question the resource should answer. A short visual explanation can introduce one process; a full episode can show how several ideas connect. An interactive plate is useful when the learner needs to explore a scene rather than watch it from beginning to end. Read the format alongside the title before deciding how much time to allow.

Find the words used in a short clip

The help page identifies a text button below short videos that expands the literal spoken text. This is a useful second route when a pupil can follow the picture but misses a technical word. It is separate from assuming that a transcript will appear automatically over the moving image.

For a vocabulary exercise, first ask the pupil to describe what the clip shows. Then inspect the text for the specific term that was difficult to hear. Return to that moment and connect the spelling to the object or action. Copying a whole transcript before viewing would make it harder to tell whether the learner understood the explanation or simply read ahead.

Include the older catalogue when the title seems to have vanished

Schooltv says videos older than ten years enter its archive and can be included by selecting the archive option above the search results. Normal results alone are consequently an incomplete check for a resource used years ago.

If an old lesson plan names a clip, search its distinctive title words, then include archive results before widening to the general subject. Compare the programme, description and duration with the lesson plan. A newer video on the same topic may be useful, but it is a different resource and may no longer match the old worksheet.

Prepare the viewing sequence

Keep the chosen clip and any accompanying activity together in the lesson notes. Specify whether pupils should watch once for the overall explanation, pause to inspect a diagram or use the text after listening. Those instructions give a short clip a clear role instead of treating every search result as a miniature lecture.

Preview dated material for changes in terminology, examples and presentation. An archive label explains where the video sits in discovery; it does not certify that every factual detail remains suitable for a current lesson. This guide reflects the published help, without a classroom or playback test.

Questions answered

Why is an old Schooltv video absent from ordinary results?

Videos older than ten years are placed in the archive. Include archive results before concluding that the title has been removed.

Is the literal text the same thing as visible subtitles?

The help describes an expandable text button for short videos. Check the player separately for any on-screen subtitle option.
