SVT Play access choices: select the feature the programme offers

Find SVT Play’s subtitle, spoken-text, description and signing choices without confusing the player menus.

Open the programme before judging the menu

SVT’s player guidance places supported subtitle, clearer-speech, spoken-subtitle, description and signing choices in the speech-bubble menu. The gear menu contains other settings, including playback speed and bandwidth. Available choices depend on the programme and device, so a familiar icon is the start of the check rather than proof that every feature is present.

Choose the actual episode first. A series page can describe the production while the episode player supplies its usable options. Check the selected episode number and title before comparing menus, especially when moving between an ordinary edition and an adapted one.

Name the need in ordinary terms

Decide what would make the programme usable. You may need text for spoken Swedish, audio explaining silent action, read-aloud translated text or a signed presentation. These needs can coexist, but none is an automatic substitute for another. Selecting a faster speed or a different picture setting does not create an absent access version.

Tell the person preparing the screen the desired feature as well as the title. A request for the documentary with description is more actionable than a request for an accessible documentary. It also makes a later comparison possible if the wrong version starts.

Follow the current screen’s controls

SVT documents different layouts for web, mobile applications and televisions. Use the guidance for the surface in front of you. A control visible under a pointer on a laptop may be reached differently with a remote, and an instruction for one mobile operating system should not be treated as a universal button sequence.

After changing the selection, listen or watch briefly to confirm the result. The menu highlight shows a choice was made; the programme passage shows whether it serves the intended need. Keep those two observations separate if the outcome is unclear.

Avoid accidental changes while exploring

Change one setting at a time and keep the initial choice in mind. If you adjust speed while investigating an audio option, it becomes harder to know which change affected intelligibility. Return to normal playback before comparing the alternate presentation.

Once the right version is selected, keep a direct programme link and the access label. Recheck the next episode instead of assuming a catalogue-wide arrangement. The same broadcaster can supply different adaptation choices for different programme items.

Read the Swedish text label in full

SVT distinguishes Svenska, which supplies translated foreign speech, from Svenska (allt tal), which includes Swedish speech as well. Keep the full label in a viewing note when this coverage matters. The general selective-versus-full-caption check is explained in our related article.

Questions answered

Is the gear icon the only place to find access choices?

SVT’s current guidance places the relevant supported choices in the speech-bubble menu.

Does a feature listed in player help exist on every episode?

No. Check which choices the selected programme and device actually offer.
