UR Play: prepare an educational programme through the right route

Separate public leisure viewing from UR Play’s education login, teaching resources and programme windows.

A classroom task can need a different route

UR’s current guidance distinguishes ordinary leisure use from its education login, which gives eligible teachers, educators and older pupils access to the full educational offering. A programme visible on the open service and one prepared through an education account can therefore have different availability contexts.

Decide whether the session is personal viewing or school preparation. If you are organizing a lesson, use the institution’s appropriate route before making the programme the centre of the plan. A public link that works today is useful evidence for today’s viewing, but it does not establish access for a class several weeks later.

Start with what learners should be able to do

Write a concrete outcome: identify the argument, explain a process or compare two viewpoints. Then choose the episode and any teaching guide or worksheet that supports that outcome. A broad series title is a weak lesson plan because individual episodes can differ in level, focus and length.

Use a short preview to check vocabulary, pace and the kind of response you expect. If the programme is in another language, inspect the item’s actual language and subtitle choices. UR’s multilingual offering is not a promise that every production has every language version.

Check the window beside the item

UR explains that programme windows differ and that its own productions often remain available longer than externally produced material. Use the selected item’s current availability information when scheduling a session. Avoid turning a general statement about long windows into an expiry date for a specific episode.

Keep an alternative activity that meets the same learning objective in case the chosen programme is no longer available. The alternative need not be a duplicate film: a written prompt or a different authorized programme may preserve the lesson’s purpose without relying on a stale link.

Prepare the display and the route back

Open the actual episode on the screen to be used, check its offered access features and make the teaching material easy to reach. Record the programme title, episode, intended section and the source page with your lesson notes. That is more useful than a screenshot of the homepage’s current recommendations.

UR also publishes specific conditions for selected programme embeds. If embedding is your intended route, read those conditions for that use; the appearance of an embed control does not make it a general publishing licence. A direct official link remains the simplest way to preserve source context in an ordinary viewing plan.
