Ireland has its own programme identities
RTÉ and TG4 should not be replaced by a generic UK television entry. Ireland and the United Kingdom are separate country contexts, even when programmes or viewers share a language. Keep the broadcaster and actual title in the request, especially for Irish news, a local series or an Irish-language programme.
RTÉ’s services information distinguishes its on-demand Player, news service and other operations. A broadcaster brand on its own is not one continuous feed or a promise that every programme appears in the same catalogue. Identify whether you want a channel, a particular episode or a dated news bulletin.
TG4 speech and subtitle choices are different fields
TG4’s own subtitle guidance describes optional text on its Player, with some older material retaining burned-in subtitles. Irish subtitles can be offered where available. This means a selectable text control and text already embedded in the picture are different situations.
If text cannot be switched off, first check whether it is part of an older video image rather than repeatedly changing the app setting. If the goal is learning Irish, original Irish speech with Irish text serves a different purpose from English translation. Choose the option actually provided for the programme.
Programme-specific information is stronger than a broad platform assumption
TG4 publishes current programme announcements with specific language and release information. Such an announcement applies to the named series or season, not automatically to every title in the archive. The same caution applies to a live stream, a replay and a short promotional excerpt.
Use the episode and date when comparing results. A programme available ahead of television transmission is not necessarily missing because the linear schedule has not reached it. Conversely, an old listing or a short clip is not proof that the complete programme remains playable.
Prepare the exact Irish viewing question
Name RTÉ or TG4, the title, the relevant episode or bulletin date, and the required spoken or text language. If an accessibility edition matters, identify it separately. Describe whether the issue occurs in the broadcaster’s own Player or through another television distribution route.
That detail helps distinguish title selection, language-track availability and account access. It does not make programme rights transferable between services. Use the actual broadcaster’s current conditions for the account and location concerned instead of inferring worldwide access from an Irish flag or familiar programme name.
Questions answered
Are RTÉ and TG4 interchangeable because both are Irish broadcasters?
No. They are separate identities with different programme contexts.
Why might subtitles remain visible after switching them off on an older TG4 item?
TG4 explains that some older content has subtitles burned into the picture.
