Start with the external-device role
LG Universal Control lets a supported Magic Remote operate connected equipment such as a set-top box. This is separate from pairing the remote to the TV. A pointer working in webOS is useful, but it does not establish that the box understands its commands.
Identify the box model and HDMI input. Keep the box’s original remote available during configuration so you can verify its functions and recover if the integrated route is incomplete.
Use automatic setup where supported
LG’s guide says webOS 4.5 and later can configure integrated control automatically for a connected set-top box. Automatic discovery is not a guarantee for every product. Observe whether the television actually completes the setup and identifies the intended device.
If it does not, use the television’s manual Universal Control setup and follow the on-screen prompts. LG directs users to the exact model manual because detailed menus differ. Do not invent a universal code or select an unrelated brand merely to complete the wizard.
Test the commands the viewer needs
Check directional movement, OK, Back and the relevant playback or guide actions supported by the setup. Then confirm power and volume targets separately. A working TV volume button can give a false impression that box navigation has been configured.
Keep the same box screen during each comparison. If a command works with the original remote but not the integrated route, record the specific command and setup identity. That is a control-compatibility question rather than a streaming fault.
Preserve a practical fallback
The aim is convenient ordinary use. If an essential box function is unavailable through Universal Control, keep its original remote nearby rather than promising complete one-remote operation.
