Select the external display first
Apple’s Displays settings expose refresh choices when a supported external display is connected. Select the TV or monitor you intend to change before inspecting the available modes. A laptop panel and external television can have different capabilities.
Keep the Mac model, cable, adapter and display in the record. The panel’s maximum specification does not prove every connection route supports that mode.
Choose a documented combination
Open System Settings, Displays and inspect Refresh rate for the selected screen. Use a mode supported by the complete route. Apple warns that an unsupported high rate can leave the screen black; the largest number is not automatically the best choice.
Compare using the same familiar video and stable TV processing. Record resolution as well as rate so a mode tradeoff is not mistaken for a change in source quality.
Separate Adaptive Sync from a universal film rule
Apple documents Adaptive Sync as a variable-refresh feature for compatible hardware and GPU-rendered output. It should not be described as proof that every video application matches every film’s original frame rate.
If testing variable refresh, consult the current compatibility guidance and keep a supported fixed-rate fallback. A setting appearing in a menu is one observation; stable behavior during the intended task is another.
Describe the actual outcome
Check desktop readability, motion and ordinary pause and resume. If only one app looks uneven, preserve that scope before changing all displays. A global setting should not be adjusted repeatedly for unexplained source differences.
For help, provide the selected screen, mode pair and the exact symptom. This page explains Apple’s controls without claiming a hands-on display measurement or universal movie-matching feature.
Questions answered
Why is Refresh rate absent?
Apple says the option depends on a connected external display supporting rate changes.
Does a high output rate add frames to the source?
No. Output timing and recorded video frames remain different properties.
