Start with the interface task
Roku’s screen reader speaks interface text as the viewer navigates. Its settings are under Accessibility, Screen reader on supported devices. A spoken menu is a navigation aid; it does not add an audio-description soundtrack to a programme.
Begin with a simple system screen and practise moving focus, listening and selecting. Keep a comfortable audio level and a known route back before entering an unfamiliar catalogue.
Choose and confirm speech rate
Roku offers speech-rate choices and plays a preview while moving through them. Its guide says pressing OK selects the rate. Hearing a sample is therefore different from confirming a preference.
Try a short familiar menu at the selected rate. Choose a pace that lets the viewer identify an item before moving again. The fastest option is not automatically the most usable, especially when labels are unfamiliar.
Check the activation shortcut
Roku documents four presses of Star as an on/off shortcut. Learn that behavior so unexpected speech after repeated Star presses can be identified. Check the actual screen-reader settings before assuming a programme has switched audio tracks.
Keep shortcut behavior clear for other household users. A repeated button action intended to open an app menu can otherwise be confused with a new voice coming from the programme.
Test beyond the Home Screen
Open the intended app, locate one item, start it, pause and return. Listen for useful labels at each step. A platform screen reader cannot guarantee that every third-party app exposes complete accessible controls.
Report the exact unlabeled control or blocked action if the journey fails. This page uses Roku’s documented controls and contains no hands-on accessibility certification.
