Choose the problem you want to reduce
Roku distinguishes Leveling, which aims for more consistent volume across material, from Night, which raises quieter sound relative to louder effects. Available modes vary by device. These choices address listening behavior, not programme rights or network quality.
If the problem is a loud advertisement compared with a show, consistency may be the goal. If the problem is following dialogue without loud effects at night, dynamic-range behavior may matter more. Describe that goal before choosing a mode.
Use the controls shown by the device
Roku’s current guide uses sound settings available during playback or through the device’s settings, with paths differing between TV and player products. Follow the actual model’s options rather than assuming all listed modes exist.
Some apps assign the Star button another function. Roku documents selecting the mode from another appropriate app and returning, where that setting persists. An app-specific Star action is not proof that the remote or sound hardware has failed.
Compare at a moderate level
Use the same short dialogue-and-effects passage, keeping the speaker route fixed. Compare Off with the intended mode and judge whether speech is easier to follow without an uncomfortable jump. Avoid compensating with several TV and receiver processing modes at once.
Check the result on another ordinary item afterwards. A setting that improves one extreme passage can sound different on music or a quiet programme. Keep the viewer’s comfort as the practical criterion.
Retain the model limits
Roku explicitly says volume leveling is not on every device, and some products have only a subset of modes. If a control is absent, consult the model support rather than inventing a hidden menu.
For help, supply the device, selected mode, output speakers and the material that demonstrates the issue. This guide follows Roku’s documentation and contains no measured loudness or sound-quality claim.
Questions answered
Does every Roku have all volume modes?
No. Roku says availability and the mode set vary by product.
Are Leveling and Night identical?
No. They address consistency and quiet-versus-loud balance differently.
