HDR belongs to a display route
A Windows computer can have an SDR laptop panel and an HDR television attached at the same time. Open Settings, System, Display, select the intended HDR screen and inspect its HDR options. A feature available on one screen is not automatically enabled across all outputs.
Keep the cable, adapter and television input in the record. The screen’s advertised capability and the mode Windows can use through the current route are related but separate observations.
Check layout when the option is missing
Microsoft documents a case where a laptop duplicates its desktop to an external HDR display and HDR is unavailable. Extending the desktop is the documented comparison. Change the layout deliberately, then inspect the external display’s HDR capability again.
If the option remains unavailable, do not assume the desktop layout was the only limitation. Review the computer, display and connection requirements. A change that works on another laptop does not establish support on yours.
Balance desktop content after enabling HDR
An HDR-enabled screen can make ordinary SDR desktop material look unexpectedly bright or dark. Windows provides a balance control for SDR/HDR content, with behavior that differs between built-in and external displays. Select the TV and adjust the relevant control while viewing it.
This balance is not a replacement for checking the actual programme format. A vivid desktop cannot prove that a film is playing in HDR, and a dark scene cannot by itself establish a fault. Compare the same known material and stable television picture mode.
Leave a recoverable viewing configuration
After the change, check a normal desktop task and a known video. Confirm that text is readable and that the viewer can return to settings. Record the selected display, layout and HDR state so a later dock or monitor change can be compared meaningfully.
The result is a verified local configuration for that route. It is not evidence that every streaming service delivers HDR on Windows, which depends on its own application, plan and content requirements.
Questions answered
Why can HDR disappear when screens are duplicated?
Microsoft documents this limitation for some laptop/external HDR arrangements; compare an extended desktop.
Does turning on HDR make all video HDR?
No. The source and application must supply the relevant content and support.
