Choose between two kinds of text
Live captions in Windows transcribe speech that the computer hears through supported audio playback. They are different from a subtitle track supplied with a film. A publisher’s subtitles may include timing, names or sound descriptions that generated recognition does not reproduce in the same way.
Use the programme’s own accessible track when it meets the viewing need. Live captions can be useful where a suitable track is missing or the viewer wants an operating-system-level aid. Do not assume generated words are an authoritative transcript.
Prepare the first session
Microsoft documents Windows key plus Ctrl plus L as one way to turn Live captions on. They are also available in Accessibility, Captions. First use asks for consent to on-device speech processing and downloads language files. Complete that preparation before a time-sensitive programme.
Select an available language that matches the speech. A recognition resource being installed is different from the programme containing a subtitle file. Make sure the caption window is visible and does not cover the part of the picture the viewer needs.
Check with familiar speech
Play a short passage whose language and dialogue are clear. Compare the generated text with the speech and inspect readability from the normal seat. Names, overlapping voices and background sound may require more cautious interpretation than a simple one-person sentence.
Keep the microphone option separate from captioning programme audio. If the task is watching a film, verify which audio is being captioned before enabling a room microphone. This prevents household speech from being confused with the programme.
Do not generalize translation features
Microsoft distinguishes Copilot+ PC translation abilities from ordinary Live captions. A Windows 11 version number alone does not establish every translation feature. Check the actual hardware and available language choices rather than promising a particular pair.
This guide explains the documented setup and a useful viewing check. It does not evaluate caption accuracy for a programme or language; important wording should be checked against the original audio or an authoritative supplied transcript.
Questions answered
Are Live captions the same as the film’s subtitle track?
No. They are generated speech recognition, while a supplied subtitle track is part of the media service or file.
Does any Windows 11 PC provide all Copilot+ translation features?
No. Microsoft distinguishes those features by supported hardware and language availability.
