Prepare an SDR version of owned HDR media

Plan an HDR-to-SDR deliverable around source interpretation, highlight handling, colour conversion and a separate review copy.

HDR is separate from resolution

Define a real SDR deliverable

An SDR version of an owned HDR programme needs a controlled picture transformation and a correctly described output. Removing an HDR label does not by itself perform that transformation. Start by identifying the source interpretation and the destination's actual colour and format specification. Preserve the HDR source as a separate master.

Choose whether the output is a review copy or a finished public version. A review conversion may help an editor work, yet still be unsuitable as a final grade. Name that distinction in the filename and handoff note so a convenient preview is not accidentally promoted to the approved delivery master.

Select contrasting review passages

Create a short review reel with at least two different challenges. One might contain a bright window beside an indoor subject; another might contain dark material with a small bright graphic. These invented examples are selection criteria, not measured claims about any programme. Add relevant branded graphics or captions if they are part of the delivery.

Look at the important relationship within each shot: whether the indoor subject remains readable while the window retains a sensible appearance, or whether the dark scene is lifted beyond its intended mood. A brighter result is not automatically a better result. Preserve the creator's intention where it is known.

Keep the conversion stages traceable

Record the assumed input transfer and colour representation, the chosen tone-mapping approach, any gamut handling and the output description. Use a documented production tool with a workflow appropriate to that source. Do not combine a speculative range correction with tone mapping and saturation changes in one unexplained export.

For an adaptive presentation, keep the SDR and HDR identities coherent across files and manifests. Apple's HLS authoring rules include video-range signalling for relevant variants, but those rules do not certify an arbitrary conversion. The rendition description must match the encoded result, and destination-specific requirements need their own check.

Review the exported copy

Watch the reel through the intended SDR delivery route. Compare shot changes, faces, gradients and overlay readability, then inspect the final full programme at selected points. Check that a later encoding or upload stage has not reintroduced contradictory HDR signalling or an unexpected conversion.

Retain a concise approval record containing the source identity, output identity, tool version and viewing environment. State which visual checks were performed and which were not. If the source interpretation remains unknown, resolve that uncertainty before presenting the derivative as a faithful SDR master.

Questions answered

Is deleting HDR metadata a tone map?

No. Metadata removal and changing the picture's luminance representation are different operations.

Will one tone-mapping preset suit every programme?

Do not assume it. Review passages that expose the actual programme's highlights, shadows and graphics.
