Define the package under review
Start with one owned presentation and a fixed output revision. Record the entry playlist, rendition inventory, expected duration or live mode and required audio and text. Do not mix a manifest from one build with segments from another. A package identifier gives later findings a stable subject.
RFC8216 describes the core version-seven HLS playlist model. Apple's authoring specification adds requirements for Apple-device delivery. Keep these scopes separate and name any newer extension your workflow uses; a core-protocol check should not silently certify an extension it has not examined.
Separate validation layers
First inspect syntax and references. Then check whether the intended resources are published and accessible under the authorised delivery conditions. Next inspect media timing and the claims made about independence and rendition relationships. Finally perform playback and editorial review in the required destination.
Give each finding its own layer. A missing segment is not repaired by changing a language label. A wrong caption edit is not fixed by a valid playlist. This separation lets the person responsible for packaging, publishing or editorial assets act on an exact problem.
Use a bounded defect record
For a hypothetical package review, one entry might identify a subtitle resource referenced by the manifest but absent from the published revision. Another might identify a wrong-language track that loads correctly. Keep expected result, actual result, resource identity and check method beside each finding.
Capture enough context to reproduce the issue without exposing access-bearing URLs. Internal paths can be replaced by stable asset identifiers in a shared report. Record the original privately if the authorised investigation needs it; do not turn a validation report into a public inventory of credentials.
Close the loop after correction
Repeat the failing check against the corrected package and review neighbouring boundaries or affected rendition combinations. If a manifest changed, confirm that the correction points to the intended files. A validator exit code can support structural acceptance, but cannot establish every target's playback or accessibility behaviour.
Finish with explicit passed, failed and untested items. Preserve the output revision and tool versions. A useful result identifies the package's demonstrated capabilities and remaining limits, without claiming that a successful local validation measures a commercial service or guarantees every viewer's network.
Questions answered
Does a valid playlist prove every resource plays?
No. Referenced resources, media structure and destination playback require their own checks.
Should a corrected manifest reuse files from an older build automatically?
Only when their identity and compatibility are intentional. Keep the package revision coherent.
