Budget what the player can select
An adaptive presentation can pair one video rendition with different audio renditions. The declared delivery budget must describe the relevant playable combination. An encoder's video target alone may omit data the viewer needs at the same time.
For Apple-device HLS, the authoring specification bases BANDWIDTH on the largest peak-rate sum among playable rendition combinations. Use measured package information appropriate to that definition. Keep the specification's scope and measurement method with the calculation.
Build a combination worksheet
List each video candidate, the compatible audio group and every selectable audio rendition in that group. Identify combinations that are actually permitted rather than summing every audio language simultaneously. Preserve units consistently and distinguish bit rates from byte counts.
Imagine an invented video peak of 4200 kbit/s that can pair with audio peaks of 128 or 384 kbit/s. The larger playable sum in this simplified worksheet is 4584 kbit/s. The arithmetic illustrates selection logic; it is not a measured value or a recommended encoding ladder.
Keep several budgets distinct
Average encoded rate helps with storage and longer-term transfer planning. Peak-related declaration serves a different purpose. Transport overhead and the viewer's available network capacity add further questions. Do not present a media-rate worksheet as a guarantee that a household connection will sustain playback.
Also distinguish bandwidth declaration from visual-quality design. Two renditions with different frame dimensions and compression settings need their own content review. Raising a declaration does not improve the encoded picture; lowering it does not make the same bytes cheaper to deliver.
Verify the complete package
Recalculate when the selectable audio, encoder settings or packaging changes. Inspect the output manifest against the worksheet, including the actual group relationships. A new audio option can change the relevant combination even when the video files remain untouched.
Retain measurement intervals and the output revision. Compare declared values with actual encoded material using the destination's prescribed method, then perform appropriate playback acceptance. State unmeasured or unsupported combinations explicitly. A useful bandwidth record explains the package the player can choose, rather than a convenient video-only number.
Questions answered
Should I add every language track into one bandwidth value?
Use the permitted simultaneous combination, not a sum of mutually exclusive choices.
Does the declared number certify a user's internet connection?
No. It describes the presentation under a defined method, not every network path.
