Name the actual profile
IMSC is a family of constrained timed-text profiles built on TTML. A recipient asking for IMSC needs a precise version and profile, not an arbitrary XML file with a new extension. Obtain the destination's delivery specification before converting an owned caption asset.
The W3C IMSC1.2 Recommendation of 4 August 2020 defines distinct text and image profiles. Their separation matters to what the asset carries and how it can be processed. It does not imply that any destination advertising TTML accepts every possible IMSC feature.
Build a meaningful conversion sample
Choose an authorised excerpt that exercises the production's difficult cases. A plain two-line English subtitle cannot validate a programme that also needs complex script handling and intentional placement. Include actual required characteristics without reproducing private programme content unnecessarily.
Review the exported document against the required profile with an appropriate validator, then inspect it through the intended presentation path. Keep structural findings separate from visual or editorial findings. Passing a profile check does not prove perfect rendering in every implementation.
Deliver evidence with the file
Include the requested profile, export tool and version, matched picture identity and known conversion limits. If an image-based delivery is required, preserve the text authoring source and any text alternatives appropriate to the workflow. Avoid presenting a bitmap caption as inherently equivalent to accessible text.
Retain a short review record and the representative sample. When the recipient changes its profile or processor, repeat the relevant checks. The useful outcome is an explicit, reviewable interchange contract, not a blanket claim that changing formats preserves every caption feature.
Questions answered
Does an .xml extension identify an IMSC-conforming file?
No. The actual document and required profile need checking.
Does profile validation establish every destination's rendering?
No. Structural conformance and the recipient's rendered result are separate checks.
