Design cache policy by media resource role

Choose separate cache treatment for mutable playlists, immutable media and private responses in an owned delivery system.

Europe. In the picture.

Classify the resource by behaviour

A live manifest changes as the presentation advances. A versioned finished segment can be designed never to change. A private response may require different handling again. Giving every resource the same cache policy ignores those roles and can create either unnecessary traffic or stale delivery.

Make a worksheet with resource type, whether bytes can change, intended audience, freshness lifetime and replacement procedure. Record the origin and intermediary rules together. A policy written in application code is not evidence that every edge response actually carries it.

Use directive meanings carefully

HTTP caching distinguishes storage and validation decisions. For example, no-cache is not simply a promise that nothing will be stored. RFC8246's immutable extension addresses resources that stay unchanged during their freshness lifetime. Apply each concept to the intended resource behaviour.

For an owned versioned segment, long reuse can be appropriate when the publication design really preserves its bytes. For a moving playlist, the useful freshness period must fit the update and latency needs. Choose values through the delivery design and protocol requirements, not a universal performance recipe.

Plan the replacement before a failure

Imagine a hypothetical publisher overwriting a segment under an address treated as unchanged. Some viewers may retain the earlier bytes while others receive the new ones. Clearing one preparation computer's cache does not resolve that inconsistency for everyone.

A versioned replacement creates a clearer identity when that fits the system. Publish the complete new package, then update its entry point deliberately. If private response content is involved, inspect the cache key and audience separation rather than assuming a unique-looking URL is sufficient.

Verify actual responses and transitions

Review response headers and cache observations at the relevant delivery points. Test an initial fetch, intended reuse, an update and a failure scenario in staging. Preserve resource identity and timestamps so a later reviewer can tell whether an old playlist was served within or beyond its intended freshness.

Keep the chosen policy and assumptions in the handoff. Revisit them when the live window, publication frequency or authorisation model changes. A cache hit is a delivery observation, not proof that the media content is current, correctly packaged or authorised for every request.

Questions answered

Does no-cache mean never store?

No. Its validation meaning differs from a storage prohibition.

Should every HLS resource have the same freshness lifetime?

Choose according to the resource's mutability, audience and delivery role.
