Use the broadcaster’s stream or the intended distributor
ARD’s own Mediathek offers on-demand programmes and livestreams without a general requirement to buy a separate streaming subscription. A third-party television platform may still charge for its own distribution package. Those two statements can both be true because they concern different services.
If you are comparing an ARD stream inside a paid TV platform with the broadcaster’s own page, name the route. A fee shown by the platform does not automatically become an ARD account fee, and the availability of one route does not define every feature on the other.
An optional account adds continuity
An ARD account can retain a watchlist and viewing progress across devices. ARD’s help places video functions in Meine ARD and audio functions in the corresponding ARD Sounds area. The same credentials do not mean video and audio content have become one identical interface.
Use an account when you want those personal functions, and verify the intended account on both devices when progress is missing. A watchlist entry is a saved reference to a work; it does not extend the broadcaster’s availability window for that work.
Live does not mean every scheduled minute is online
Online rights can differ from conventional broadcast rights. ARD explains that particular films, foreign productions or parts of sports and music coverage may be unavailable in a livestream. An interruption at one programme can therefore need a programme-rights explanation rather than a complete device reset.
Keep the broadcaster, channel edition, programme and date together when comparing a schedule. Regional streams can carry different material. A generic Das Erste or ARD label is not enough to establish that two regional selections should show the same programme at that moment.
A finished broadcast may take time to become replay
Live programmes can require technical and editorial processing before an on-demand version appears. A programme finishing on linear television does not mean the final replay file is already ready on every surface.
Look for the actual programme page and the offered playback option. If the live timeline provides a supported rewind route, that is a different resource from a completed replay item. Do not invent a universal retention period from a calendar screen or assume that every broadcast must become a permanent boxset.
Optional account features can have their own requirements
ARD’s current help describes advance premieres as an optional feature for signed-in viewers. This qualifies a broad statement that ordinary Mediathek viewing does not require an account: a particular added experience can still ask the viewer to sign in.
Check whether the screen is offering a standard replay, a live stream or an account-linked preview. Completing one optional account task should not be confused with purchasing the separately branded ARD Plus service.
Questions answered
Is an account required for ordinary ARD Mediathek viewing?
ARD’s help says the content can be used without logging in.
Is ARD Plus simply an ARD account upgrade?
No. It is a separate commercial catalogue.
