Start with the library-specific destination
Berlin’s public-library network directs VÖBB card holders to voebb.ava.watch for AVA film streaming. AVA describes a locally curated library offering of international and European cinema. This is the Berlin library edition, rather than a single commercial membership that automatically opens every institution’s AVA selection.
Follow the AVA link from the VÖBB digital offer when beginning. Keep the library card relationship separate from an ordinary film-store account. The presence of AVA at another library is not evidence that the same credentials or film selection apply there.
Choose format before subject
The reviewed AVA navigation separates Feature Film, Documentary, Short Film and Video Recording. The last category includes discussion and music; a result relating to a filmmaker may therefore be a recorded conversation rather than the feature itself. Read the format before planning a screening.
A practical short session might begin in Short Film and then a subject such as animation or documentary. For a longer session, start in Feature Film and select a genre. This avoids opening every search result merely because it shares a theme, and gives a clearer reason for the eventual choice.
Use collections as a second way into the catalogue
The Berlin page groups material under collections such as Berlin On-Screen, festival selections and regional cinema. These are curatorial routes through the available library, not a promise that every film from the named festival is included. AVA says local experts shape the selection for each region.
For an evening about Berlin, compare a feature with a short from the relevant collection and write down one shared question, such as how each presents a neighbourhood. For a festival interest, identify the actual film and format instead of treating the collection name as a ticket to a current event.
A second library film service stays separate
A VÖBB card can be relevant to more than one digital offer, but that does not turn AVA into filmfriend. Begin in the chosen service and keep its own programme record. A film found in one catalogue is not evidence that its player, saved list or availability transfers to the other.
If access fails, distinguish reaching the library entry from reaching a film and starting its video. Supply the specific library edition and film title through the official support route. That preserves the information needed to examine a library-login problem without confusing it with a missing programme.
Questions answered
Can I use a generic AVA account for every library?
This guide verifies the VÖBB card route and Berlin destination only; AVA says its selections are curated for local institutions.
Does a festival collection contain every film from that festival?
Its label identifies a curated selection. Inspect the films actually listed.
